A SHORT HISTORY OF THE CHURCH

HISTORY OF THE LYCH GATE

The lych-gate is made of oak, taken from one of the oldest farms of Hyde, which stood in Church Street, opposite the old School. It bears the inscription "Erected by Thomas Ferns Handford, Fern Lea, Hyde, 1885." In the photograph the origimal gates can be seen. Older members of the congregation will remember it with the gates, which were removed at some time later.

There was a problem when a vehicle knocked over the Lychgate. It was decided by the Church Council that this lchgate should not be replaced. Which led to an arguement with the Local Authority whoinsisted it should be replaced. Afte weeks of arguement with no reply from the church, the Diocese ordered it to be replaced. It was of course listed.
